Combat grab a level 2 fighter feat only requires a hand free and the target to be within reach. It then gives grabbed condition.

My personal opinion is that in an effort to "fix" grappling, Pathfinder actually made it more complicated than 3.5. It wasn't straightforward in 3.5, but it was even less so in Pathfinder.
